Globe myBusiness launches ShiftED to transform PH schools and empower Filipinos with world-class learning via technology

ShiftEd launch with (from L-R): Debbie Obias, VP, Segment Marketing Head, Globe myBusiness; Michelle Tapia, Head for Strategy, Innovation and Transformation, Globe myBusiness; Richard Jugar, University of San Carlos; Jonathan De Luzuriaga, President, Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA) and CEO, Spring Valley; Ritchie Ramos, Segment head for Education, Globe myBusiness; and Dr. Marilyn Balagtas, Philippine Normal University.

Globe myBusiness has launched a campaign that will enable academic institutions in their journey towards digital transformation and empower Filipinos with world-class learning through technology.

Called ShiftED, the initiative was created by Globe myBusiness to assist the government and schools in developing globally-competitive students and teachers.

“We now have a generation who is in a world that is always online. They are living in micro moments influenced by technology so we need to keep up to ensure that we communicate better and more effectively with them. We need to adjust or we won’t connect with them. We need to innovate or we won’t be able to influence,” said Derrick Heng, Globe Senior Advisor for Globe myBusiness, Globe Telecom’s arm which caters to micro, small, and medium enterprises.

He added: “Globe myBusiness hopes to create a better experience and impact the lives of people, thus, we continue to look for ways to help the education sector be future-ready by improving how students learn and educators teach with the use of technology.”

ShiftED carries education-related activities of Globe such as the Digital Thumbprint Program which promotes responsible digital citizenship and cyber wellness for students; and PRISM, a three-week digital literacy improvement program aimed at advancing the digital literacy skills of Filipino educators.

Aside from these programs, Globe myBusiness provides connectivity and solutions that can aid schools to be digitally-ready and help learners and educators stay ahead of the curve.

For instance, Globe myBusiness learning management solutions encourage students to go beyond memorization and boost their learning through interaction, critical thinking, and a readily available source of knowledge. A school management system, on the other hand, streamlines all the tasks involved in running an institution such as administrative activities and student performance monitoring to save time, money, and energy, leading to better performance of the staff and students.

Globe myBusiness also provides relevant solutions to local entrepreneurs and assists the country in its digital transformation by partnering with Spring Valley, the largest integrated technology and innovation hub in the Philippines, to bridge the academe-industry gap by helping connect college students with the right companies for on-the-job training and prepare the workforce for the demands of the industry.

Under the partnership, Globe myBusiness will power up Spring Valley’s online platform OJTPH.com, an on-the-job training matching site that allows students, companies and future employers, schools and other institutions to work together for a more efficient and meaningful student internship.

ShiftEd was introduced during Edutech 2018, a two-day conference and exhibit that aims to deliver ways on making education continuously relevant in the 21st century.

Globe readies network for emerging IoT services with 700 MHz band

PH readiness for technological innovations vital in driving economic growth

Globe Telecom is enabling its network to support emerging Internet of Things (IoT) services, making full use of all the 700-megahertz spectrum and other existing LTE spectrum assets the company is currently assigned with. Globe is now piloting Narrow Band- Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technology due to its inherent advantage of long reach and range, while enhancing mobile data services.

NB-IoT is one of the three 3GPP standards-based low power wide area (LPWA) technology developed to enable a wide range of new IoT devices and services. NB-IoT as a standard is more developed compared to other defined 3GPP standards and the device ecosystem is evolving at a much faster pace.

Out of the 3 standards endorsed by 3GPP, Globe has enabled NB-IoT as this technology will have far reaching benefits for many people, industries, even communities and early adopters would be able to enjoy its benefits. Huawei and Nokia, Globe existing technology partners, are collaborating in this journey, ensuring network readiness to support new services.

“Given new business requirements in a highly digital environment, Globe is gearing up to deploy emerging IoT services relevant to various enterprises including the public sector. This is all part of our commitment to enable enterprises take advantage of the latest technological innovations, which is vital in driving economic competitiveness and growth in the country,” Globe Telecom President & CEO Ernest Cu said.

The Philippines is a good use case for a number of emerging IoT services that include parking sensors, water meter reading, lighting control, garbage collection and flood control, among others.

“Fundamentally, IoT is about creating a digital ecosystem for services that are being used by various organizations. The use of IoT-related services is growing significantly around the world and it is time that we adopt them in the Philippines so that local enterprises can take advantage of the business benefits derived from these new technologies,” Cu stressed.

Globe has also been aggressively deploying LTE sites nationwide. Globe has deployed to date around 1,750 LTE sites across the country using the 700 MHz band. More than

700 cell sites are located in Metro Manila, providing pervasive LTE mobile connectivity to its customers.

Globe has also deployed Massive MIMO (MM) as part of its technology roadmap. MM is the fundamental radio access technology for 5G. The 5G network targets to have higher speeds, lower latency and better capacity, enabling higher density of mobile broadband users and supports device-to-device connectivity and massive machine communications.

Globe CEO Ernest Cu joins thought leaders in new, original Netflix documentary for Altered Carbon

Top streaming platform, Netflix recently released a documentary that tackles the possibility of immortality through technology, as a brief introduction to its latest science fiction series 'Altered Carbon'. The short video featured several prominent thought leaders in entertainment, technology, science and literature, including Ernest Cu, president and chief executive officer of Globe Telecom.

Cu is an immensely forward-thinking leader and tech innovator, who believes in empowering the Filipinos by elevating their digital lifestyle within the global standards. That vision has shaped the trajectory of Globe as a purveyor of all things digital. Hence, Netflix decided to profile Cu, along with Altered Carbon author Richard K. Morgan, Steve Aoki, Jesse Wellens, and other thought leaders to discuss how technology is changing the landscape of human society and how technology deeply affects the lives of individuals. They were also asked to imagine the various possibilities of living forever.

'Altered Carbon' is the new Netflix original series based on the classic cyberpunk novel written by Richard K. Morgan. Its story is set 300 years into the future, in which technology allows human consciousness to be digitized and stored in discs called "stackers" or uploaded to the cloud. When a person dies, this stacker is recovered from the body (called a "sleeve"), or downloaded from the Cloud and reinserted into another "sleeve", thus ensuring that the person lives again. Since the process is very expensive, only the rich can afford to live lengthy and seemingly immortal lives. This status quo has led to a careless disregard for human lives among the wealthy.

Takeshi Kovacs, the protagonist in the series, is the lone survivor of a group of elite interstellar soldiers that was defeated in an uprising against the new world order. After 250 years in ice, Kovacs is revived by Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, to solve Bancroft's suspicious death.

From writer and executive producer Laeta Kalogridis, Altered Carbon stars Joel Kinnaman, James Purefoy, Martha Higareda, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Will Yun Lee, and Dichen Lachman. Altered Carbon is on Netflix starting February 2.

Globe customers can enjoy six months access to Netflix with Globe At Home Plan 1299 and up, while Postpaid customers can get six months worth of Netflix with Plan 999 and up. To learn more, just visit

Globe myBusiness, Spring Valley partner to help connect students with right companies for on-the-job training

From L-R: Grace Anduiza - Managed Services & Solutions Head, Globe myBusiness; Derrick Heng - Senior Advisor, Globe myBusiness; Cleo Santos - Sales Head, Globe myBusiness; Jonathan de Luzuriaga - President & CEO of Spring Valley; Jorge Cosgayon - Head of Development, Spring Valley

Globe myBusiness, the micro, small and medium-enterprise arm of Globe Telecom, has joined forces with Spring Valley, the largest integrated technology and innovation hub in the Philippines, to bridge the academe-industry gap by helping connect college students with the right companies for on-the-job training.

Under the partnership, Globe myBusiness will power up and provide funding for Spring Valley's online platform OJTPH.com, an on-the-job training matching site that allows students, companies and future employers, schools and other institutions to work together for a more efficient and meaningful student internship.

"Globe myBusiness creates a Globe of Good by providing relevant solutions to local entrepreneurs and assist in the country's digital transformation. At the same time, we want to prepare the workforce for the demands of the industry so that there will be a perfect match between skills and available jobs," said Derrick Heng, Globe myBusiness head.

He added: "We are confident that this partnership with Spring Valley will strengthen and enhance the country's student internship program as well as on-the-job training -- the best way to equip college students with the necessary tools to ensure that they get the best possible exposure in their chosen field and get a better chance at landing their dream job after graduation."

"It is an honor to be working with Globe myBusiness for OJTPH.com. Globe has done a great job of reaching out to the youth, and has a long history of supporting the ICT industry. Through this partnership, we will be able to reach more people and organizations, strategically bringing us closer to our goal of making OJTPH.com the go-to platform for students' on-the-job immersion. Derrick Heng mentioned wanting to do a "Globe of Good", which mirrors the Spring Valley mantra, "Tech for Good" - this just makes us more confident that this collaboration will make a positive impact on our talents and their future," said Jonathan de Luzuriaga, Spring Valley CEO.

As the current Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA) President and Director for the IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP), Luzuriaga knows too well the challenges of the academe-industry gap that plagues the Philippines.

According to him, 70 % of the country's talents come from the provinces, and only 30% come from Metro Manila. However, most companies are in the capital city, preventing talents in the provinces from getting much-needed relevant experience in their chosen field unless they can afford to move to the big city as a student.

Through OJTPH.COM, students, educational institutions, companies, and other organizations can easily register and get connected to one another. With this platform, students can take control of their on-the-job learning experience by working with and for companies and organizations that best suit their individual areas of expertise. On the other hand, schools can monitor student progress and training while companies and organizations can more easily screen OJT applicants that fit their culture and needs.

Created by the Spring Valley Crew - De Luzuriaga's team of software developers and creatives composed of local Capiz talents - the OJTPH platform is just one proof of the wealth of talents in the countryside. The same group also creates and maintains several software, internet of things (IOT) projects, games, and other products and services for various companies and organizations in the Philippines.

To sign up and be part of this groundbreaking project, students, schools, companies, and other organizations can go to OJTPH.com to create their own profile.
