TULA: Teaching life’s lessons to kids in school

TULA is one of the five winners of Globe Future Makers Program

From L-R:  Kickstart President Minette Navarrete, Ashoka Philippines Chairman  Rico Gonzalez, TULA teachers Mara Eala and Elise Zulueta, TULA Founder James Centenera, and Globe Telecom Head of Innovation Mikey Garrovillo
While today's school teachers focus mostly on imparting knowledge, this group of educators thought otherwise. They believe that learning is not just about knowledge but also building character, attitude and skills.

"The impetus behind the creation of our organization is that we recognize, especially in the Philippines, that there is a big achievement gap in school, and the gap exists because kids need more than just academics to thrive and survive in the 21st Century. Unfortunately, kids struggle not only to learn Math and English but also in developing their attitude, character and skills such as strength and resilience, courage and drive," according to Mara Eala, Content and Learning Manager at The Ultimate Learning Accelerator or TULA.

TULA is a chain of after-school centers that aims to provide kids with the support they need to succeed in school and beyond school when they grow into young adults. Its advocacy won it a place in the recently concluded Globe Future Makers Program where five game-changing digital solutions were picked up among 135 entries.

Elise Montinola, who takes care of TULA Operations and Customer Service, said the team was elated for being chosen as one of the top five winners of GFM. "We know that a big part of GFM is about leveraging the use of technology. This is why we developed our own TULA app that contains our lessons in 'gamified' format that learners can take home and practice. We try to make learning as dynamic as possible, from the teachers to the lessons, to show that learning doesn't have to be boring," she explained.

She added: "Technology and the TULA applications and other dynamic teaching techniques are all part of the TULA curriculum to support kids' learning. We hope our learners and their parents realize that the applications, together with the actual lessons at the centers and with our coaches, are what's needed to help kids reach their full potential."

Montinola is confident that GFM will help open more doors for TULA through the use of technology to spread its wings to other areas here and abroad.

"Globe Future Makers was launched to influence and build a whole ecosystem of social innovators like TULA and help create a positive impact on society with the help of technology. It serves as a platform to enable the winners to receive coaching and mentorship from some of the best social innovators around the world, gain access to relevant startup workshops, and be connected to possible partners and investors. These assistance will allow them to build their products faster and launch sooner to benefit the communities that they aim to serve," said Chelle Gray, director for Globe Citizenship.

Eala said teaching methods and curriculum in many schools today are still very traditional. "Rote memorization doesn't teach kids about analysis and critical thinking. What's missing in the curriculum is that it doesn't teach kids to be curious, how to think, how to work with others, how to work hard, and other essential traits and skills, which kids can use when they grow up and look for a job."

The youthful mentor said their teaching involves 2-hour learning sessions, with the first hour devoted to Math and English where kids have the most difficulty. The second hour involves "Missions," or project-based activities that tackle Science and Technology, Transportation, Medicine, Journalism, and other interesting themes that kids enjoy and are relevant for their future.

"These may seem like adult things but we want to expose kids already to these industries so they get motivated and start thinking what they want to be when they grow up and drive them to succeed in school. We want them to see school not as an end but as a stepping stone to get a clear view of what they want in life. Essentially we're teaching them life's lessons, like life coaching for kids. When we asked them before what they want to be in life, the most ambitious choice was a soldier or barangay tanod because that's their world. Our mission now is to change that and expand their world, like in transportation, we tell them you can be a pilot or astronaut. That they can be anything and the sky's the limit."

There are currently four TULA centers - two in Pasig and another two in Makati. There are also plans of scaling up within Metro Manila, around the Philippines, and in other countries like Pakistan. "We've already piloted programs in Pakistan, and are looking at other countries. The goal is to help 10 million kids in the next 10 years. It's not really a low-hanging fruit that we're after but something that is important for all kids," Montinola pointed out.

TULA has already gained notice abroad, becoming a winner for "SOLVE at MIT", a social innovation contest in the US led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Its mission is to identify the best solutions to specific, actionable challenges through open innovation, and build and convene a community of leaders and change-makers committed to partnering together to pilot and implement these solutions.

Boracay businesses learn from the experts

Globe myBusiness digital tools workshop teaches SMEs how to stand out

Boracay is undoubtedly one of the areas most densely populated by sellers, thanks to its unstoppable and diverse market. But how can one retailer stand out in a sea of shops and vendors, many of which are selling the same thing?
To help business owners with this dilemma, Globe myBusiness brought its tried and tested digital business solutions to the country’s prime tourist destination through a four-day workshop titled Digital Tools to Future-Proof Your Business at The Tides Hotel.
Well-known entrepreneurs and inspirational speakers were tapped to share their experiences to motivate the participants.
Francis Miranda, an advertising consultant and an entrepreneur himself, has spent much of his life doing two things he loves most: helping businesses and guiding others with theirs; and travelling to as many places as he can.
With one of his beliefs being to “tailor fit your life to how you want it,” he’s a firm believer in the idea that success comes to those who actively work for it and take all the opportunities they are given.
He discussed many of the learnings he’d picked up over the years and detailed the following common trends happening across business in the Philippines today:
  1. Demand for Personalization.
Customers are increasingly demanding products and services that are made for their unique needs and lifestyles, thus, businesses should make their products cater more specifically to each customer and make their patrons feel appreciated and special.
  1. Rise of the Omni-channel and the Importance of an Online Presence.
Customers these days tend to research online and may already have certain expectation or judgment before visiting the physical shop. The best businesses provide a seamless and convenient shopping experience whether online or offline.
  1. Automated Business Operations.
To work around the rising needs of customers, business owners have gone digital as well. While the prospect may sound complicated to entrepreneurs who are new to the idea of digitization, it’s actually the opposite -- digital business owners are simplifying their operations by automating work processes that otherwise would be taxing or time-consuming.
  1. Power of Customer Advocacy.
Customers love to take photos and post reviews in order to get Likes and Comments.  They serve as free advertising that drives potential customers toward the brand -- hence the importance of providing a “wow” experience to ensure positive reviews.
When it comes to creating the ultimate “wow” experience, Francis has only three guidelines: extraordinary, progressive, and consistent. Make sure customers’ experience is beyond that of an ordinary shopping trip, treatment or procedure. Make sure it becomes progressively better as time goes by. And finally, make sure that quality never falters and can be relied upon.
Other speakers similarly presented the many ways a business can go digital and make the most use of Globe myBusiness’ products and solutions to enhance business operations and profit. But they put a little more on the table by talking about how working in the service industry isn’t just a matter of having the best tools but is also about putting in the best effort.
ECAMIA Hotel Management Corporation President Ana Marie Alcantara gave the audience an inside look at how she started, ran and managed her hotel business and gave some tips for working in the tourism industry. Among these tips are:
  • Being tech-savvy.
One does not have to be a digital genius, but must know (and provide) digital means for  customers to find the business, give feedback, and do what they love most: share through social media.
  • Catering to a diverse market.
From millennials to digital nomads to people traveling for “bleisure” (a merging of business and leisure), the market has become more diverse than ever so a business must be able to provide for people from all walks of life.
  • Working with and not against the competition.
In a somewhat surprising statement, Ana Marie claimed that when customers come in asking for something her hotel can’t offer, she leads them to places that will, even if these other hotels are actually her competitors. On their side, they do the same thing and refer customers to her place as well.
  • Being yourself.
Being unique is the only way to set one apart so customers will not go elsewhere. As she says, “You have to be authentic. You have to have your own unique selling proposition.”
CJ Juntereal, on the other hand, talked about working as a food columnist. She highlighted the one thing all businesses should prioritize as much as product or service quality: a great customer experience.
“Investing in customer service is an act of bravery because the returns don’t happen right away,” she admits. But she proves that this is definitely an investment worth making, saying, “Customer satisfaction is the prime driver especially in the hotel and restaurant industry. Without customer satisfaction, there is nothing for your hotel or restaurant.”
Her tips for achieving this satisfaction included knowing the market well by studying data analytics, allowing customers to be as digital as they want to be, making it easy for people to reach the business, setting one apart by creating an amazing experience, and being creative with digital tools to enhance online presence.
Naturally, to achieve all these things, it’s best to get help from the right source. As Francis says, “Adapting to the future is all about choosing the right tools.” Thus, Globe myBusiness’ products and solutions are here to MSMEs with any and every business concern.
Globe myBusiness is a business unit under Globe Telecom which caters to MSMEs not only for their telco needs but also for solutions that will help create ease of business operations.

Cebu Landmasters ends 2017 with record P4.58-B reservation sales, plans 20 new developments in 2018

Homegrown property developer Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI) finished the year 2017 with P4.58 billion in total reservation sales, exceeding its target by 13.75 percent and beating the 2016 result by 55.6 percent.
CLI attributed its exceptional performance mainly to newly launched residential projects: 38 Park Avenue (Cebu IT Park) with 745 units, Casa Mira South (Cebu) with 3,200 units, Mivesa Garden Residences (Cebu) with 1,514 units, Mesaverte (Cagayan de Oro) with 798 units, and the 694-unit MesaTierra (Davao City). These projects are now almost fully sold.
The listed company said its sales performance is resounding affirmation that its products respond to the needs of the market and are distributed strategically to the areas where demand is strongest.
“All the projects we launched were well-received by their respective markets making 2017 another banner year,” said CLI chief executive officer Jose Soberano III referring to the firm’s efforts to penetrate new markets such as Davao and Dumaguete and to diversify its products.
The past year saw CLI aggressively venturing into the hospitality industry to increase its inventory to a total of 610 rooms in four years. All CLI hotel projects are located within company-developed mixed-use communities. The 180-room “lyf Cebu City” by Ascott targeting millennial travelers and the 250-room Citadines Riverside Davao were launched in late 2017. They will complement Citadines Cebu City set for completion in 2018.  More hotel projects are expected to break ground in 2018.
Cebu Landmasters is confident it will gain even greater momentum this year. The company has targeted reservations sales to hit P7 billion this2018, a massive 52-percent hike from the previous year, as it starts more projects and expands to more territories in Visayas-Mindanao growth centers.
The array of new developments planned for the year include 10 in Cebu (two residential subdivisions, three residential condominiums, three offices, one hotel and one industrial park). Details of these projects will be revealed in the coming months.
CLI has also set its sights on two new territories in the Visayas. Bacolod will play host to two residential condominiums and a hotel, while a residential condo is planned for neighboring Iloilo. Reports from the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) show that the Visayas region will zoom ahead of other regions in the next five years and is expected to outpace the projected 7 to 8 percent growth for the Philippines.
The listed property developer also plans to fortify its foothold in Mindanao where it will launch two residential subdivisions and one residential condominium in Cagayan de Oro while a central business district and two residential condominiums will be unveiled in Davao. NEDA reports that in terms of economic growth, Davao ranks third among 18 regions in the country.
The upcoming projects boost CLI’s total number of projects to 66 from 46 last year, as it continues to strengthen its brand in its niche markets. The company’s residential condominiums are mostly designed for the mid-market segment, although it also offers condos for the high-end market.
“In 2018, we will continue to expand our footprint in the Visayas and Mindanao, and develop projects that respond to the growing market in these areas,” said Soberano who is confident CLI will meet its performance targets set for the year and beyond.
It expects that hikes in household income resulting from the newly approved package 1 of the Duterte government’s Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) will be channeled to housing.
Studies (TUCP, 2010) have also shown that around 2 to 2.1 percent of OFW remittances are channeled to housing. Total remittances in 2017 were seen to hit US$33 billion (World Bank, 2017). This means that at least US$693 million or about P35 billion would be used for shelter requirements.
CLI also expects that government spending in infrastructure will unlock land values outside Metro Manila and stimulate business in the countryside as the Duterte administration pushes for investments outside of the country’s capital.

Globe Telecom looks at global best practices in fight vs. illegal sites, child pornography

Globe Telecom looks at global best practices in Singapore and other countries in its fight against illegal sites and child pornography in order to protect the rights of young Filipino boys and girls who are most susceptible to exploitation and abuse.

The island-state currently regulates the presence of objectionable content and conduct online through its Internet Service Providers (ISPs) as enabled by the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act and carried out by Singapore's Media Development Authority. A list of 100 websites are banned including a site that allegedly recruited underage boys for sex and nude photography.

In the Philippines, the Anti-child Pornography Act of 2009Intellectual Property Code, and the Anti-Camcording Law were previously placed to combat child pornography and other illegal sites. In 2014, the Cyber Crime Law took effect that made any crime under the Revised Penal Code, which is a list of general punishable acts,  be considered a cybercrime if done using a computer or the internet.  Thus, prior laws pertaining to intellectual rights and piracy are given more support for enforcement.

With enabling laws, regulatory agencies such as the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), Intellectual Property Office (IPO), and the Optical Media Board (OMB) among others can learn from the practice of other countries if the Philippines is really serious at combating piracy and child pornography.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe SVP for Corporate Communications, said:  “This advocacy is important especially as we contribute greatly to the development of a digital nation. We want to provide our customers with safe and quality content and ensure that our products and services are not used for illegal activities.  At the same time, we want to protect intellectual property rights including our own original content and the licensed content of our global and local partners so that we can give the people who create content what’s rightfully due them.”

In 2017, Globe invested 2.7 million dollars to improve its Domain Name System (DNS) with several blocking capabilities that enabled the company to block close to 2,500 domains or sites found to have lewd and child pornography-related content and will continue to actively look out for such illegal sites.

Although the Philippines has Republic Act 9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009 to protect every child from all forms of exploitation and abuse, sadly the country continue to top the list of global sources of child pornography based on the United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) The State of The World’s Children 2017 report entitled “Children in a Digital World.  The situation, however, is expected to improve with the signing into law of the child online protection provision in RA 10929 or the Free Internet in Public Places Act.

The Unicef report noted that the pervasiveness of the Internet, mobile apps and online payment methods further aided in the proliferation of child pornography and sex trafficking.

It  was collaborated by another report from the International Justice Mission, a human rights group handling cases of online exploitation of children in the Philippines which noted that 8 out of 10 victims that they have rescued are 12 years old and below, some even as young babies.

Under Philippine law, “child pornography” refers to ”any representation, whether visual, audio, or written combination thereof, by electronic, mechanical, digital, optical, magnetic or any other means, of child engaged or involved in real or simulated explicit sexual activities”.

The fight against child pornography and illegal sites is part of Globe Telecom’s #PlayItRight advocacy campaign to ensure that its products and services are not used in illegal activities and to protect the copyrighted content of its global partners.

Globe myBusiness helps SMEs become future proof

Participants of the Globe myBusiness workshop for Boracay SMEs
Globe myBusiness has brought its valuable expertise and tried-and-tested products and solutions to the country’s favorite tourist destination, Boracay, to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) become future-proof.

The workshop, dubbed as Globe myBusiness Digital Tools to Future-Proof Your Business, centered on the most prominent industries currently flourishing in Boracay such as tourism, hotels and accommodations, restaurants and food establishments, and retail.

In the four-day event, entrepreneurs, managers and various other staff members from all over the island were able to pick up a wealth of knowledge that allowed them to better understand technology and what it can do for them.

Derrick Heng, Senior Advisor for Globe myBusiness said:  “Employing technology in business isn’t instantaneous. Rather, it’s a step-by-step process. It may take years for a business to fully maximize its digital potential, but the results are definitely worth the challenge.  Globe myBusiness is here to assist entrepreneurs every step of the way.
As a first takeaway from the workshop, the participants learned about the importance of social media which is the simplest way to use technology for business.  Through social media, entrepreneurs can spread word about their business, get feedback, and contact their clients or customers in the blink of an eye.

“Digital marketing was the most important lesson for me, that you really need to make the most out of it through social media,” said Lourdes A. Ramirez of Secret Garden Boracay.
June Myrrh Dueñas and Dane Aldeguer of Isla Chicas Travel Consultancy added:  “We understand that everything’s online, and everything’s on mobile phones, and we need to be a part of everything that’s happening. We have to grow with the changes, with technology.”

At the same time, Globe myBusiness educated the participants about different business solutions that can help them sell online such as Shopify; boost efficiency through the Gsuite online suite of productivity tools that can be used anywhere and on any device; and advertise their business like the Adblast targeted texts to consumers, among others.

“The workshop was very helpful for me. The things discussed were a
Digital technology, however, has to be embraced not only by the decision-makers but the whole team for it to make a bigger impact.

“We learned a lot that could help us with our future plans for the business. We are most interested in the concept of GCash. Our consideration now is how we’ll train our employees, because they’re already doing things a certain way, so it’ll be a [challenge] helping them adapt to technology,” said Flory Jhen and Flory Vhel Alvarez of Shinyou.

However, technology only emphasizes what business owners already know and live by, that it is quality that still gets the customer. Thus, technology has to work side by side with current sales, service and marketing strategies in order for it to work.
